Dengue fever in India

In Goa, about 513 persons were tested for dengue (January-12 Aug 2011), of which 7 were tested positive.

Two more dengue deaths were reported in the Orissa state today (16 Aug 2011), taking the toll to 14 so far. According to officials of the health department, 195 of the 541 blood samples sent so far have tested positive for the disease. Though the fever was earlier confined to Angul, Dhenkanal, and Sundargarh, it has now spread to 16 districts, including Balasore, Khurda, Cuttack, and Kalahandi.

Ten new cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi in the last week. The total number of cases this season has gone up to 25, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
