Cholera in Afghanistan

An outbreak of cholera has been spreading in Kandahar and Zabul provinces. In June 2011, the infection was first reported from Maroof district, Kandahar province and a second outbreak in Atghar district, Zabul province. The media has reported around 54 cases overall. Further information is awaited.

Advice for Travellers

Those travelling to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene is essential.
