Dengue in Brazil (Update 1)

15 June 2022

The Brazilian Ministry of Health (in Portuguese) continues to report high rates of dengue fever transmission in all five Regions of the country.

Between 1 January 2022 and 31 May 2022, there were 1,104,742 cases of dengue, which is an increase of 198% in cases compared to the same period in 2021. There have been 504 deaths from dengue this year.

Dengue is an infection found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. It is spread by Aedes mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness.

There is no vaccine against dengue licensed in the UK. Treatment is supportive only.

Advice for Travellers

All travellers to endemic regions are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection. Aedes mosquitoes are particularly persistent and aggressive. They bite between dawn and dusk.

Travellers developing a fever during or on return from travel are advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
