China Specific Risk of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

China has reported a recent increase in case numbers and/or emerging or known variants of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Shanghai Municipality and Jilin Province.

Following a review of the public health risk assessment process, Shanghai Municipality and Jilin Province has now changed to having a high risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) in mainland China. 

There is also a high risk of exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) and/or emerging or known variants of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Shanghai Municipality and Jilin Province. 

• All travellers are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Shanghai Municipality and Jilin Province due to the reduced availability of healthcare locally. This applies even to travellers who are fully vaccinated.

Travellers should be aware that the risk of COVID-19 in this country may change at short notice. They must also consider the risk of exposure in transit countries and during their journey.

Prior to travel, all travellers should be advised to:

• Check the latest government guidance on the FCDO foreign travel advice and country specific pages for travel to this country, and the rules on entering the UK on return.
• Consider their risk of severe COVID-19 and availability of medical facilities at the destination: travellers at increased risk of severe COVID-19 should carefully consider their travel plans.
• Ensure they are up to date with UK recommendations on COVID-19 vaccination
