Tickborne encephalitis in Rhone-Alpes-Provence, France

17 June 2020

French media quoting regional public health authorities(in French) have reported an outbreak of tickborne encephalitis, primarily in the Rhone-Alpes-Provence region. As of 10 June 2020 there have been 37 cases linked to the consumption of raw milk goat cheeses. The cheese producer has been named as GAEC des Chevrettes du Vieux Valey, located at Condamine in Haut-Bugey, Ain.

Advice forTravellers

Tickborne encephalitis is uncommon in people in France. However, it is widespread in Alpine areas of Europe and may occur in neighbouring rural areas. All travellers to endemic areas should be:

  • Aware of TBE, its transmission and clinical outcomes.
  • Aware of activities increasing tick exposure, e.g. walking, camping, cycling in forested areas in tick season.
  • Given advice on avoiding tick bites and prompt removal of ticks; use of appropriate clothing i.e. trousers tucked into socks and use of insect repellents should be discussed.
  • Avoid unpasteurised milk/milk products, including cheese.

When to consider vaccination

Vaccination should be considered under the following circumstances and is dependant on the individual risk assessment:

  • Travellers to endemic countries during the tick season (spring- early autumn) who plan outdoor activities in forested areas, e.g. walking, hiking, camping, cycling, fishing etc. For up to date guidance on endemic countries please consult specific country pages.
  • Those planning to reside long term or work (whereby the nature or work increases risk of exposure to ticks) in endemic areas.
