Avian Influenza (Human) in Egypt (Update)

The media has reported on further human cases of avian influenza (H5N1) in Egypt. At least 4 cases and 2 deaths have been reported between the end of 2014, and 5 January 2015.

The most recent cases include: two fatal cases, a 3-year-old child from Giza governorate and a 45-year-old man from Menoufiya governorate; a 6-year-old girl from Giza governorate who is in a critical condition, an 11-year-old boy in critical condition and a 30-year-old man both from Minya governorate.

It is not known if there is any connection between the two children from Giza governorate.

A total of 29 human cases of avian influenza (H5N1) have been reported during 2014, in Egypt. Of those, 11 have been fatal cases.
