The animal health authorities in Slovakia have reported a case of rabies in a fox. The animal was identified on 26 December 2014, and reported on 7 January 2015, as positive for rabies virus. The fox was located around the village of Plavec in Stara Lubovna district, northeast Slovakia close to the border with Poland.

Slovakia is considered by WHO to be a low risk destination for rabies. Travellers should be aware that the country does border with Poland which is classed as a high risk destination for animal rabies. Wildlife are known to cross borders.
Travellers should always report any bites for proper medical assessment.
Pre-exposure rabies vaccine is available for the small number of travellers who may be at particular risk in Slovakia.
