Rabies (Canine) in Ghana

07 January 2015

An alert has been issued by the Veterinary Service of Ghana warning of an increased risk from rabies due to a shortage of canine vaccine.

During the last quarter of 2014, a total of 890 dog bites were reported, of those, 120 bites were by stray dogs. There is concern that dog bites will increase as the number of stray dogs increase in Accra and other parts of the country.

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has also recorded an increase in human deaths from rabies. In 2014, 17 human deaths were recorded in Ghana; 4 from Upper East, 2 from Ashanti, one in Assin Fosu, 3 were reported from Korle Bu, one from Obuasi and 6 from other regions.

Advice for Travellers

Ghana is considered by WHO to be a high risk destination for rabies and travellers are advised to avoid all animal contact.

Pre-exposure rabies vaccine is recommended for those considered to be at risk. All animal bites sustained must be assessed by a medical practitioner for treatment and follow up.
