Measles is an ongoing problem in Ethiopia despite Government mass immunization campaigns. In 2014, large numbers of measles cases continue to occur. More than 15 500 suspected cases were reported from 249 districts of the country, of those, 8625 were confirmed as positive for measles. The incidence rate for measles increased from 3.1 in 2013 to 8.6 in 2014.
The immunization campaigns conducted during 2014, targeted children under 5 years (due to financial constraints). The target group should ideally include all children under 15 years; 68% of the cases in 2014, were between 5 and 15 years-of-age; 32% were children under 5 years. The reported measles vaccination coverage in the country was 71% in 2013, and 60% in 2014.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
