Update to Country Specific Hepatitis A Vaccine Recommendations

16 September 2021

The Travel and International Health Team of Public Health Scotland have recently reviewed and updated the country specific hepatitis A vaccine recommendations. You will notice that some of the hepatitis A recommendations on TRAVAX have changed.

For each country, the most recent incidence of Hepatitis A infection from the Global Burden of Disease Study (2017-2019) has been reviewed alongside data from the World Health Organisation and United Nations Children’s Fund 2019 report on progress on household drinking water, sanitation and hygiene 2000-2017. (1,2)

The collated information has been interpreted as a specific vaccine recommendation into one of the following categories:

Vaccine usually advised (for all travellers at risk)

The incidence of hepatitis A in the country is moderate to high.

  • All non-Hepatitis A immune travellers are recommended to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A

Vaccine sometimes advised (for travellers at higher risk)

The incidence of hepatitis A in the country is low to moderate.

  • Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for those travellers whose activities during travel place them at higher risk of infection, or who may develop more severe disease if they were infected.

Vaccine selectively advised (for travellers at highest risk)

The incidence of hepatitis A in the country is low.

  • Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for those travellers at highest risk of infection through their activities during travel, or who may develop more severe disease if they became infected.
  • These individuals are recommended to be vaccinated against hepatitis A for life in the UK as per The Green Book

The revised Hepatitis A vaccine recommendations can be found in the 'Vaccination Advice' section of each TRAVAX country page to assist you in determining which vaccinations are appropriate for your traveller during the risk assessment process.

See the TRAVAX Hepatitis A page for further information in the disease.
