Country Specific Risk of Coronavirus (COVID-19) (Update 36)

30 June 2021

Since 17 May 2021, there has been a cautious approach to resuming international travel. Many countries still have restrictions in place for international travellers in response to COVID-19.

Travelling abroad carries a risk of bringing new cases and variants of COVID-19 back into the UK, therefore UK travellers are still advised to consider whether their trip abroad is necessary before booking travel. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) continue to advise against non-essential international travel to some countries and still advise against cruise ship travel.

The UK Government’s Global Travel Taskforce traffic light system:

  • categorises countries into a red, amber or green list based on risk of coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • indicates what a traveller must do regarding quarantine and testing upon their return to the UK
  • does not indicate which countries are currently allowing UK travellers to enter their country: this should be checked in the 'entry requirements' section of each FCDO foreign travel advice country page.

Before booking any international travel

All travellers should be made aware of precautions they should take to reduce their risk of exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) before, during and after travel as detailed on the fitfortravel website COVID-19: Health Considerations for Travel page.

Travellers should also be advised to review the FCDO foreign travel advice regularly for guidance on travelling abroad, including if:

  • the FCDO advise against travel to their destination
  • the country they are travelling to is currently accepting UK travellers
  • there are entry rules in response to coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • proof of COVID-19 vaccination status is required for entry

Also see the UK government’s guidance for British people travelling abroad during the coronavirus pandemic for additional information.

Country Specific COVID-19 Risk

All TRAVAX country pages include a COVID-19 country specific risk-rating which identifies each country as having a high, moderate or low risk of exposure to COVID-19 for UK travellers.

  • This risk rating can be found in the 'Emerging Health Risks' drop down on every country page and each rating is accompanied by appropriate travel advice.

In June 2021, the COVID-19 risk for UK travellers was decreased in 2 countries:

  • Malta
  • Belize

In June 2021, the COVID-19 risk for UK travellers was increased in 1 country.

The COVID-19 risk rating in each country is being kept under constant review and may change at short notice.

Prior to arriving in, or returning to the UK

All travellers must:

  • complete a passenger locator form
  • take a coronavirus (COVID-19) test and get a negative result during the 3 days before travel to the UK
  • book and pay for hotel quarantine (if returning from a 'red list' country)
  • make arrangements to quarantine at home, or in the place they will be staying (if returning from an 'amber list' country)
  • book and pay for COVID-19 testing following their return to the UK, as indicated by the traffic light system rules in the country they live in
  • follow the national COVID restrictions for the UK 4 nations country they arrive in

Quarantine and testing rules are different in each of the UK 4 nation countries, therefore prior to travel, travellers must ensure they are able to comply with the rules appropriate to the UK nation they will be arriving in and reside in (if different).
