The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports counterfeit rabies vaccines in the Philippines

01 February 2019

The World Health Organisation have issued a Medical Product Alert after receiving reports of falsified verorabĀ® vaccines in the Philippines.

In December 2018 the Philippines Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health warning concerning falsified VerorabĀ® vaccines circulating in the country. Since that date a further batch of falsified VerorabĀ® vaccines has been reported. Investigations are ongoing and laboratory analysis is underway to better assess the potential risk to public health. Two falsified vaccines have been discovered and the details including photographs and batch numbers are available on the WHO Website

It should be noted that the stated manufacturer on the packaging of these vaccines, Sanofi pasteur, have confirmed that they did not manufacture these vaccines.

The Philippines are classified as a high risk country for rabies. Travel health professionals are reminded of the importance of discussing the risk of rabies with travellers and the benefits of receiving pre exposure vaccination prior to travelling overseas. This is particularly important given this recent report; and the potential for vaccine failure resulting in death, following exposure to the rabies virus.
