Malaria Free Countries

22 November 2018

The WHO World Malaria Report 2018 is now available online.

Malaria continues to be endemic in many countries with the biggest burden of disease by far across sub-Saharan Africa.

There is some good news for countries that have achieved malaria free status (no indigenous cases of malaria in at least the past three consecutive years). As such we have removed the malaria map for those countries and amended the malaria advice text accordingly. The affected countries are:

  • Argentina
  • Azerbaijan
  • Georgia
  • Iraq
  • Kyrgystan
  • Sri Lanka
  • Turkey
  • Uzbekistan.

Advice for travellers

Whilst malaria free status is good news, this does not mean that there are no other insect borne infections that could cause illness to travellers and avoidance of insect bites, including mosquito bites, is still advised.
