International Measures to Stop the Spread of Wild Polio Virus - Polio FAQ's

06 November 2018

The Travel and International Health Team at HPS are aware of concerns regarding ongoing measures to prevent the international spread of poliovirus. These measures include additional boosters of polio vaccine for some travellers to certain countries, and issuing of a certificate of vaccination.

For some individuals who travel to affected countries frequently, this can result in annual vaccination. Annual vaccination with polio containing vaccine is not harmful, however the necessity of this is sometimes questioned.

We have updated our Polio FAQs to assist practitioners who may be faced with this situation.
