Updated Malaria Advice for Travellers to India

03 December 2012

Changes to the malaria advice and malaria map for India are published on TRAVAX and fitfortravel today. This is the result of work that has been carried out over the past few months by the HPS Travel and International Health Team and the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group.

The Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) was convened during 2012 and it is under the consensus agreement of this group that the change to the advice for India has been made. The summary methodology explaining how the revisions came about can be viewed via the SMAG page under the malaria section of TRAVAX.

The main change is that HPS is recommending prescription only anti-malarials as first line for travellers to risk areas in India, as opposed to over-the-counter medication. HPS recognises that other authorities outwith Scotland continue to recommend chloroquine plus proguanil as first line chemoprophylaxis for risk areas and therefore the advice may differ depending on which source is used.

One of the key messages is that travellers should consult a health professional at least 6-8 weeks in advance of their trip in order to allow time for pre-travel preparations, including advice, chemoprophylaxis and any necessary vaccinations.

See the India country page for the updated advice and map. Users may need to 'refresh' the India map to see the revised map for the first time.
