Changes to Kenya and Ethiopia Malaria Maps

30 October 2012

We have recently updated the malaria maps for both Kenya and Ethiopia to expand the area where chemoprophylaxis is usually advised – shaded dark pink on the maps.

The area affected includes both mountains and valleys, notably the Rift Valley. We recognise that a lower risk of malaria exists at altitude in both countries (above 2500m in Kenya and above 2000m in Ethiopia). However it is very difficult to demonstrate accurately these lower risk areas on the malaria maps.

Given that the main cause of malaria in both countries is from the potentially life threatening P.falciparum, we have decided to adopt a precautionary approach, even if this results in our advice being 'chemoprophylaxis usually advised' for parts of the country containing low risk areas.

It remains essential that a thorough pre-travel risk assessment is carried out with the traveller, their individual risk of malaria assessed and appropriate advice and chemoprophylaxis (if indicated), given.

Please note that TRAVAX malaria maps are intended to be used as an aid to interpreting the country-specific malaria advice text. It is essential that the text is used as the primary reference for advice on malaria risk and appropriate chemoprophylaxis, with the accompanying maps providing additional geographical information.
