This paper, just published in the BMJ, describes risk factors for death from malaria in the UK from 1987 - 2006. In conclusion, while most travellers acquiring malaria are of African heritage visiting friends and relatives (VFRs), the risks of dying from malaria are highest in: the elderly; those who present with malaria in the UK in areas where malaria is seldom seen; tourists. Travellers going to the Gambia for 'winter sun' were specifically identified as a high risk group.
