WHO Influenza Vaccine Recommendations - 2012-2013 Influenza Season

29 February 2012

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its influenza vaccine recommendations for the northern hemisphere 2012-2013 influenza season. The recommendations for the northern hemisphere are usually made in February to allow manufacturers time to produce the vaccine. The recommendations for the southern hemisphere are usually made the following October.

WHO has recommended changing two of the three strains in the 2012-2013 northern hemisphere influenza vaccine. The last change was in 2010, when the 2009 pandemic strain was added to the 2010-2011 vaccine.

The reason for the change is that in those countries which have experienced an increase in flu activity, a proportion of A/H3N2 and B flu viruses circulating in recent months have not been matched sufficiently closely by those in this year's vaccine.

The WHO recommended strains similar to the following for the 2012-2013 season:

  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09
  • A/Victoria/361/2011 (H3N2), which replaces A/Perth/16/2009
  • B/Wisconsin/1/2010, which replaces B/Brisbane/602008
