Oral Typhoid Vaccine and Other Live Vaccines

16 February 2012

The TRAVAX helpline is receiving some enquiries regarding the use of the live oral typhoid vaccine Vivotif® by Crucell (UK) Ltd. Vivotif® has no supply restrictions at present.

One enquiry related to the timing of administration of other live vaccines when administering Vivotif®. The caller wished to know if Vivotif® had to be given at the same time as other live vaccines or four weeks apart? The SPC states: Vivotif may be administered concomitantly with the live attenuated vaccines yellow fever vaccine and oral polio vaccine.

Further clarification was sought from Medical Information at Crucell (UK) Ltd who explained that the oral preparation had no effect on the antibody response to parentally administered live vaccines and the following WHO reference was given: International travel and health 2011, Ch 6.1.6, page 84:

'The oral Ty21a typhoid vaccine can be administered simultaneously with, or at any interval before or after, injectable live vaccines.'

We hope that this information may be useful to other TRAVAX users.
