Chikungunya Virus in Republic of Congo (Update 1)

The chikungunya virus outbreak in Brazzaville is ongoing and has now spread to Pool region. Between 1-23 June 2011, 7014 chikungunya cases were reported in Brazzaville and 460 in Pool. In Pool only the towns of Goma Tse Tse and Kinkala have been affected by the outbreak. In Brazzaville the outbreak is mainly in the southern districts, including Makelekele and Bacongo.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites by covering up and the use of bite avoidance measures is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/ houses is advised for longer-term stays.
