There is currently a shortage of rabies vaccine in the UK. Rabipur® (Novartis Vaccines) will not be available until the end of October, which has led to pressure of demand for the sole other, licensed product, Rabies Vaccine BP® (Sanofi Pasteur MSD).
Sanofi have informed TRAVAX that they expect to be back in stock of Rabies vaccine next week, although there will be a temporary limit on the number of doses supplied until October to ensure that all customers receive some stock.
There may be some Verorab® vaccine remaining in the country, this vaccine however is currently unlicensed in the UK, and is available on a named patient basis.
If a patient has already started a course of rabies vaccination with Rabipur® the course can be completed with either Rabies Vaccine BP or Verorab since the vaccines may be used interchangeably to provide protection pre- or post-exposure.
