British Behaviour Abroad - Foreign Office Report

04 August 2011

The Foreign Office has released its 2010-11 report on British Behaviour Abroad. The report shows that British travellers continue to encounter preventable problems abroad, often due to a lack of travel insurance and awareness of local laws and customs at their destination. Main points of interest:

  • Hospitalisations have increased in Spain; the country with the highest number of Britons hospitalised (1024 cases).
  • Hospitalisations in Thailand have increased by 24% on the year before.
  • 347 Britons died in Thailand last year, 60% from natural causes.
  • The highest number of arrests took place in Spain (1745).
  • Reported rape cases in Greece have almost halved compared with the previous report.
  • Countries with the majority of drug arrests include Jamaica, Argentina, Brazil, Serbia and Peru.
