Discontinuation of proguanil and of chloroquine plus proguanil travel pack antimalarial tablets

10 July 2023

Production of Paludrine (proguanil hydrochloride) and Paludrine/Avloclor (proguanil hydrochloride, chloroquine phosphate) anti-malarial Travel Pack has been discontinued in the UK.

This is a significant change, as on TRAVAX there are a small number of countries where proguanil (as an alternative to chloroquine), is currently recommended for malaria chemoprophylaxis.

In response to this change, the malaria chemoprophylaxis sections on some TRAVAX country information pages will be updated to recommend alternative effective antimalarial regimes.

Users are reminded that whilst the malaria maps on TRAVAX are a useful visual guide to assist health professionals during a travel consultation, it is essential that they are always used alongside the malaria information text that accompanies the map on the individual country pages.

Advice for Travellers

In areas where proguanil remains the current first choice for malaria chemoprophylaxis, atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycycline OR mefloquine are all suitable alternatives. The chemoprophylaxis recommendations on TRAVAX country pages will therefore be updated in due course to reflect this change.

See the TRAVAX Malaria section for further information.
