Azerbaijan and Tajikistan declared Free of Malaria

31 March 2023

The World Health Organization (WHO) certified the countries of Azerbaijan and Tajikistan free of malaria on 29 March 2023.

Malaria elimination certification is granted by the WHO when a country has:

  • shown that malaria transmission by Anopheles mosquitoes has been interrupted nationwide for at least three consecutive years
  • demonstrated the capacity to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission

See the Malaria section for further information on the disease.
