Update on Supply of BCG Vaccine in UK

18 September 2018

AJ Vaccines has resumed supply of licensed BCG vaccine into the UK.

BCG vaccine is centrally procured and supplied to the NHS in line with national policy to selectively offer vaccination to those at increased risk of exposure to tuberculosis infection. Since 2015, supply of the only UK-licensed BCG vaccine into the UK from the contracted supplier, SSI, was interrupted due to manufacturing issues. In turn, this led to ordering restrictions and advice being issued on priority groups for BCG vaccine. From June 2016, an alternative BCG vaccine from InterVax Ltd was supplied to enable the continuation of the programme.

NHS board vaccine holding centres can now order the UK licensed BCG vaccine (AJ Vaccines). There are initial restrictions on order quantity to prevent stockpiling. At times the vaccine supplied may have a relatively short shelf life and this vaccine remains globally constrained.
