Updated India and Bhutan Malaria Advice

The malaria advice and maps for India and Bhutan have recently been updated. This is following consideration by the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) after an extensive trawl of the available data.

India

The risk of malaria has reduced considerably in many regions in recent years. In summary:

  • Risk is highest in north-eastern states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, district of Amini in Arunachal Pradesh, north and south Chhattisgarh, Orissa and the city of Mangalore.
  • In central Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh risk is not high enough to warrant chemoprophylaxis for most travellers, however, it may be considered for certain groups who may be at higher risk (see additional text).
  • There is low to no risk in all other areas (chemoprophylaxis not advised).

Bhutan

The risk of malaria has reduced considerably in recent years and risk is now considered to be low to no risk in all areas (chemoprophylaxis not advised).
