The World Health Organization has declared the most recent outbreak of Ebola in DRC to be over after no cases were observed in the 42 days since the last confirmed case tested negative in the remote Bas Uele province in the north of the country. In total there were 8 cases of which 4 died. A total of 583 contacts were followed up with no symptoms consistent with Ebola being observed.
Work is being undertaken to help survivors re-integrate into community life.
This is the 8th recorded outbreak of Ebola in DRC since the virus was first observed in 1976.
When outbreaks occur generally the risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola virus disease is extremely low.
Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
