Poliomyelitis in Pakistan (Update)

There has been 21 new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) reported in the past week. This brings the total number of polio cases in 2014 to 166, compared with a total number of 28 at this point in 2013.

Immunisation activities remain focused on known high-risk areas, with 182 permanent vaccination sites at entry and exit points, in effort to reach internally displaced persons. Details of known high-risk areas can be found via the following link: Globlal Polio Eradication

Advice for Travellers

It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected and take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
