Poliomyelitis in Afghanistan (Update)

26 September 2014

Two new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases have been reported in the past week, both from provinces previously uninfected in 2014.

One case is from Kandahar province, Southern Region, and the other is from Paktika province, close to the border with Pakistan. Both cases are linked to cross border transmission with Pakistan. This brings the total number of WPV1 cases in 2014 to 10.

National Immunisation Days (NIDs) are scheduled for 19-21 October.
