Schistosomiasis in France (Corsica)

20 May 2014

The Regional Health Agency of Corsica has reported several clusters of schistosomiasis infection in April 2014. Those who were infected gave no history of travel to an area where schistosomiasis is endemic. All of the cases did however, give a history of swimming in the Cavus river in South Corsica.

Investigation into the outbreak has been initiated by the local and national health authorities and based on their findings an action plan will be put in place to deal with the problem before summer when swimmers will be in the river.

Advice for Travellers

Schistosomiasis is a chronic trematode (blood fluke) infection of the gastrointestinal or urogenital tract. Transmission occurs when human skin is exposed to fresh water containing infective forms of the parasite.

Travellers should be advised to:

  • Avoid skin contact with fresh water in endemic areas e.g. ponds, lakes and rivers - this includes all water sports (diving, rafting, windsurfing, sailing.
  • Swim only in protected swimming pools or safe seawater.
  • Avoid drinking infected water.
  • Wear protective footwear when walking in soil, especially if it is damp or water logged.
  • Attend for screening on return if exposure has occurred, even if asymptomatic.
