Rabies Vaccine Supply

02 February 2017

The Public Health England (PHE) Vaccine Update January 2017Link advised that issue with supplies of GSK and Sanofi Pasteur rabies vaccines is expected to improve in February 2017.

GSK have eased general restrictions on Rabipur ordering and are now allowing 3 doses of Rabipur per account. Additionally, GSK have advised that the clinical need to supply larger quantities will be considered on a case-by-case basis through the GSK customer support team on 0808 100 9997.

Sanofi Pasteur have advised that that new stocks should be available the week commencing 30 January 2017.

Post-exposure (PEP) Treatment for Patients

In Scotland, GP’s can obtain vaccine through stock order but it is recognised that not all community pharmacies will hold rabies vaccine and there maybe a delay in obtaining it via this route. Since PEP should be instituted as soon as possible, if a delay is likely then patients should be referred to the local infectious disease physician for immediate management.

In England, requests should be referred to PHE Colindale (0208 327 6204).

In Wales, requests should be referred to the duty virologist, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff (029 20 747 747).
