Updated Yellow Fever Certificate and Vaccination Recommendations WHO 2016

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently released the updated recommendations for yellow fever vaccination and certificate requirements for 2016. The country records on TRAVAX have been updated to reflect the 2016 changes.

In addition to the updated recommendations, WHO has also produced information regarding the amendment to the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) which are anticipated to come into force on the 11 July 2016. This follows the declaration from WHO in May 2013, that the protection from yellow fever vaccination is considered to be lifelong for immunocompetent individuals.

In brief, the WHO has advised that as of the 11 July 2016:

  • The period of validity of the ICVP for yellow fever vaccination will change from 10 years to the duration of the life of the person vaccinated; this applies to all ICVP for yellow fever vaccination, including certificates already issued, and new or duplicate certificates.
  • A valid ICVP, presented by arriving travellers, should not be rejected on the grounds that more than ten years have passed since the date the vaccination became effective as stated on the certificate, and that boosters or revaccination cannot be required.

In the interim, WHO have advised the following regarding the current period of validity of the ICVP:

“Until 10 July 2016, the IHR (2005) continue to provide that the period of validity of these certificates of vaccination against yellow fever is ten years from the date that the vaccination is effective” (www.who.int/ith/2016-ith-annex1.pdf)
