Changes to the Cambodia, China and Vietnam Malaria Maps

18 May 2016

The malaria advice for Cambodia, China and Vietnam has recently been updated. These countries were considered by the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) after an extensive trawl of the available data was undertaken.

In China, the risk is reduced such that antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is no longer advised for any travellers, although advice on bite avoidance and prompt diagnosis and treatment is still essential.

In Vietnam risk is also reduced and revised advice is that antimalarials are recommended only for certain groups of travellers in specified areas. The specified areas on the Vietnam map are indicated with ‘hatching’. There is a low to no risk in many of the areas popular with tourists.

The use of ‘hatching’ on malaria maps is being introduced more on Travax; this emphasises the importance of conducting a thorough risk assessment in order to identify higher risk travellers who require additional advice.

In Cambodia there remains a significant malaria risk in the north east of the country where chemoprophylaxis should be taken. Antimalarials are advised for certain groups of travellers in other large areas of the country (hatched on the map), and there is a low to no risk in many of the areas popular with tourists.
