Chloroquine Syrup (Nivaquine) Discontinued

26 November 2014

Health Protection Scotland (HPS) has been made aware that some travellers are having difficulty in sourcing chloroquine syrup (Nivaquine® Sanofi-Aventis) for malaria prophylaxis in children. HPS has contacted Sanofi who have confirmed that Nivaquine® syrup has been discontinued and will no longer be marketed in the UK.

We have amended the 'Calculating the Chloroquine dose for children' table on the Malaria Prophylaxis page. This follows the ACMP recommendations and makes the dosage calculation for children using chloroquine tablets simpler. The table on 'Chloroquine syrup' will remain on the page for the time being as some areas of the country may still have remaining stock of Nivaquine® syrup.

Advice for Travellers

Parent should be made aware that tablet cutters are available to purchase at larger pharmacies which helps with dosing.
